Vehicle Storage
Preparing your car for storage.
Our 10 ft. by 20 ft. units with 9 ft. wide doors are perfect for temporary or long-term storage of your vehicle. As you prepare to bring your vehicle in for storage, follow our helpful guide for proper storage to extend the life of your vehicle, keeping it looking like new and running in top condition.
Please note, these are our recommendations. Do your own research, and consult with your owner's manual for specific instructions.
Check with your insurance carrier
Before storing your car for a season or long-term, be sure to check with your insurance carrier. Many insurance companies offer specific coverage written to protect your car while in long-term storage. Certain insurance carriers offer off-road coverages that are significantly less expensive on than on-road insurance coverage.
Clean your car
We always recommend that you clean your car, inside and out, thoroughly before storage. Wash the exterior and use your favorite wax over the entire exterior of the car to get rid of all imperfections and offer a protective layer on your paint. This will protect the paint from the possibility of corrosion.
After that, remove all trash and debris from the inside of the car. Vacuum it thoroughly to remove all pet hair, food crumbs, and dirt.
Change the oil and filter
We always recommend that you change your oil and filter a few days prior to storage (one to two days should be good). Used oil contains acids, moisture, and other byproducts of combustion. If a car sits for a long time, this could cause corrosion in the engine.
After changing the oil, drive the car for several miles before storing it to allow the new oil to circulate through the entire engine.
Fill the gas tank
Another important step in the process, we recommend filling your gas tank prior to storage to prevent moisture and air from getting in your tank. After doing this, use your favorite fuel stabilizer to prevent the fuel from breaking down, causing it to form varnish when it evaporates.
Cover your car with a tarp
There are many aftermarket options for tarps specific to your car that will hug the vehicle, and prevent dust from forming. Prior to doing this step, be sure to roll up your windows. These steps will prevent dust and bugs from getting inside your vehicle.
Care for your battery
Refer to your owner's manual for this step. There are some car specialists that suggest removing the battery and placing it on a wooden block so the battery won’t be drained. Other specialists will suggest leaving the battery in the car (but disconnecting the negative (-) terminal of the battery). Finally, other car specialists insist that the battery should be left intact in the car to prevent voltage spikes (which can damage various components).
Put up your convertible top
If you own a convertible, be sure to store the car with the top up. If you avoid doing this, the convertible top can form large, ugly looking creases over a period of time. Treat the top with a silicone or other lubricant intended for your specific convertible fabric.
